Day 1Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km.104 – Chachabamba – Wiñay Wayna – Sungate – Aguas Calientes

Embark on the first day of an unforgettable 2-day Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with Qosqo Expeditions. We will guide you through ancient paths and lush landscapes, leading to the iconic Sun Gate and the enchanting town of Aguas Calientes. Our journey starts early from Cusco, heading towards the Sacred Valley’s heart, Ollantaytambo. From here we will be reaching the trail’s starting point at Km.104.

• Distance Covered: We will hike approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles), embracing the trail’s natural and historical wonders.
• Highest Altitude: The trail ascends to its peak at 2,700 meters (8,858 feet) as we approach the Sun Gate. It will be offering exhilarating views.
• Lowest Altitude: Our journey begins at 2,040 meters (6,692 feet) at Km.104, where the hike commences.
• Level of Difficulty: Rated as moderate, this hike is suitable for most adventurers, combining physical challenge with unparalleled rewards.

Route Description:

Ollantaytambo:

Our adventure begins with a scenic train ride from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. This leg of the journey offers a glimpse into the Sacred Valley’s beauty, setting the stage for the day’s trek.

Km.104 – Chachabamba:

After disembarking at Km.104, we will immediately encounter the archaeological site of Chachabamba. Here, we will spend about 30 minutes exploring ancient ruins, which served as a religious and administrative center. This site sets the historical context for our trek.

Chachabamba to Wiñay Wayna:

As we advance, the trail takes us through a stunning cloud forest, adorned with orchids and waterfalls. After approximately 4 hours of hiking, we reach Wiñay Wayna, an impressive Inca site known for its agricultural terraces. We will allocate around 1 hour to explore and appreciate this site’s intricate engineering and breathtaking vistas.

Wiñay Wayna to Sungate:

The final leg of the day’s journey will be leading us to the Sun Gate (Intipunku). This 1-hour hike is full of anticipation as we approach our first panoramic view of Machu Picchu. The sight from the Sun Gate, as the citadel comes into view, is a moment of unparalleled beauty and achievement. This will be marking the climax of our day’s trek.

Sungate to Aguas Calientes:

Descending from the Sun Gate, we will embark on the final stretch towards Aguas Calientes. This part of the trek takes about 1.5 hours, winding down through lush landscapes as we reflect on the day’s journey. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, we will check into our hotel. Here we can rest and prepare for the next day’s exploration of Machu Picchu.

Day 2 Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco

On the second day of our 2-day Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, we will rise early. We will embark on a day filled with exploration and wonder. This day focuses on visiting the majestic Machu Picchu, the crown jewel of Incan civilization. We ensure an experience that merges adventure with cultural immersion, set against the backdrop of breathtaking Andean landscapes.

Distance Covered: The journey from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu involves a short bus ride. This will be followed by walking within the site. We will be covering a total distance of approximately 2 to 4 kilometers (1.2 to 2.5 miles).

Highest Altitude: Machu Picchu itself sits at an elevation of 2,430 meters (7,972 feet). It is nestles high in the Andean mountains.

Lowest Altitude: Aguas Calientes, our starting point, is located at about 2,040 meters (6,690 feet) above sea level.

Level of Difficulty: The exploration of Machu Picchu is considered easy to moderate. This however depends on how much of the site we decide to explore.

Route Description:

Aguas Calientes: 

Our day begins with an early start from Aguas Calientes. This is to ensure we are among the first to enter Machu Picchu. This allows us to experience the site in the tranquil beauty of morning light, free from the crowds.

Machu Picchu:

Upon arrival at Machu Picchu, we will spend approximately 2 to 3 hours on a guided tour. Our expert guide will lead us through the main areas. This includes the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana stone, and the Room of the Three Windows.

We will delve into the mysteries and architectural genius of this ancient site. We will be learning about its history and cultural significance.

Free Time for Exploration:

After the guided tour, we will have about 1 to 2 hours of free time. You may choose to explore further, perhaps visiting the Sun Gate or Inca Bridge. It offers more stunning views and photo opportunities.

Return to Cusco:

Following our exploration, we will return to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included). We then catch the train back to Ollantaytambo and transfer by bus back to Cusco, arriving in the late afternoon or evening. This journey allows us to reflect on the incredible experiences of the past two days.
